Deepak Shimkhada, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who

 CLAREMONT, CA –  Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Deepak Shimkhada, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Shimkhada celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Artist, art historian and religious studies educator Dr. Shimkhada began his career in academia as a lecturer of Asian art history at Scripps College in Claremont, CA, in 1981. He has since taught a variety of courses at a number of institutions throughout the southern part of California, including Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, the University of the West in Rosemead, and California Graduate University in Claremont. From 1999 to 2011, he was also a full-time visiting professor of South Asian religions at Claremont McKenna College. He has since been teaching as a professor at Claremont School of Theology and Chaffey College for the past five years.

Dr. Shimkhada’s expertise has extended beyond the classroom as a published author of four books, including “Nepal: Nostalgia and Modernity” and “The Constant and Changing Faces of the Goddess: Goddess Traditions of Asia.” He has also contributed chapters to books and articles in peer-reviewed journals. He serves as the founding president of the Himalayan Arts Council at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, CA, as founding president of the Indic Foundation, as president of the Foundation for Indic Philosophy and Culture, and as vice president of the Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast. He is the former president of South Asian Studies Association, who has also spent time on the boards of several other organizations, including the board of visitors of the school of religion at Claremont Graduate University, as chair of the Hindu Council, and as a founding board member of the South Asian Studies Association.

As an artist, Dr. Shimkhada has exhibited his paintings and graphics in groups and one-man shows in Nepal, India, Japan and the United States. His first one-man show included paintings at the Max Gallery in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1968. By 1971, one of his paintings was selected as Best Work from Nepal and was featured in its exhibition catalog. The show was held at the Triennale of World Contemporary Art in New Delhi, India.

Dr. Shimkhada has appeared as a commentator in several episodes of the History Channel series “Ancient Aliens.” He received recognition with an American Institute of Indian Studies Research Award in 1979, and later was the recipient of a Claremont Graduate University Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2008, and a Claremont School of Theology Fisher Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2016.

Born in Nepal, Dr. Shimkhada completed high school and traveled to India where he pursued a BFA and MFA at the University of Baroda. He then moved to the United States after receiving a Fulbright fellowship to study art history. Earning an MA in art history at the University of Southern California, followed by a PhD in education at Claremont Graduate University, Dr. Shimkhada was one of the first few Nepalis to immigrate to the United States. Married to Kanti Koirala since 1970 with two children, he has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in America.
